From the article... "I am not saying that we shouldn’t try--reading and studying the Bible is the bread of life for Christians, without it our faith would perish. But certainly you can see there are many people in the world who have studied for years and still come to different conclusions. How does that happen?"
It's because we're interpreting the scripture and not being led by it... which we've talked about a lot recently.
And yes... reading the Bible is important... but "without it our faith would perish?" That's a pretty weak, unfounded faith.
Joseph didn't have any "scripture" with him in Egypt. And I'm betting that hundreds of thousands of people are going to be in Heaven who never read a word from the Bible.
How does faith come? By reading? No... by hearing! And hearing by the word of God. Not the 'text' of God.
I'm glad you read it Noel, and that you took issue with those two points. I read on Wade's blog that learning occurs where there is disagreement.
In addition to being "led" by scripture, I think we're also "formed" by it . . . or more actually by God through our "hearing" his word. I don't know if that's clear, but I think your comments are right about how faith comes.

Okay... that's all I got.

I just thought I would stop by and say hello. We love it here in Ithaca, NY but we miss our friends and fellow Christians, the Whaley family.
